23. From Idea to Instagram: How an Academic Library Marketing Committee Created a Character for the YouTube Generation

Abstract

After observing low usage statistics for a handful of library services, Albert S. Cook Library’s Marketing Committee decided to create videos to promote underutilized resources. In past videos, the library relied on student actors, but it became increasingly difficult to find students willing to participate. As a result, the library purchased a puppet and then created videos featuring him. This chapter details how committee members created the puppet’s persona and scripted, filmed, edited, promoted and assessed the effectiveness of these videos. The chapter concludes with considerations for other libraries wishing to develop their own character-centric promotional campaigns.

25. Making the Cut: Do Faculty Want to be Involved in Library Database Cancellations?

Abstract

Because of the recent economic crisis, a number of academic libraries have faced the possibility of having to cancel database subscriptions. As a major user group of academic libraries, faculty have a history of being involved in collection decisions, but it is unclear to what extent they want to be involved in cancellations. Also, while the library literature outlines a variety of processes that libraries have used to involve faculty in their serials cancellation decisions, very little is written about eliminating databases. This study examines whether the strategies outlined for involving faculty in serials cancellations are applicable to database cancellations. We surveyed tenure-track and full-time faculty members at Towson University to determine their preferences for involvement in database cancellations and to determine if those preferences are a function of knowledge about the library and/or discipline of study. Abstract

A conference paper on the business strategies employed by special libraries to prevent budget cuts during recession is presented. It tackles the study which evaluates the effectiveness of these strategies using literature review, case studies and a survey of 113 special librarians who works in special libraries in Washington D.C. as its methodology. Results shows that 61% of the respondents has faced serious budget cuts and two of four libraries that were studied successfully prevented cutbacks.
